There are some tools that can help you find the exact location and size of your septic tank. You can find plumbing snakes with radio transceivers that will help you find the location of the tank. From the sounds of it you will want to use Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), which will show you the outline of the tank in the ground. Licensed septic contractors should have both of these tools available and they will help you find your tank and solve your problem.
I lived in a new home that I built for 7 years. I moved out of state and had the septic pumped for the upcoming rentors. The septic was pumped 12/13/11. They also found a broken lid and replaced it. I have the bill for it. In Feb 2012 rentors moved in and began smelling the septic. The septic was found by a different company to be disintegrating because of the weight of a newly poured lid. The lid had cracks in it and the tank had cracks in it. I had to replace the septic tank at $2500. My insurance company received two pictures and did a little checking around the area for other tanks that had disintegrated. The insurance man said, “Off gasing creates hydrogen sulfide gas that breaks down the concrete interacting with gypsum in the concrete.” The person replacing the septic said there was not evidence of that, but that in his opinion the weight of the lid cracked the tank.
How would you go about making a septic company be responsible for damage that they may have caused?
Thank you

Hey Kathryn,
That is quite the suprise!

Hopefully that helps! Good luck!
